Copywriters compose clear, easily understood messages that target a defined audience. From reports to announcements, brochures to web content, copywriters find the words that connect with people.
As a freelance copywriter, I am a flexible resource often brought in by communications teams to handle specific projects, or when the business-as-usual is taking up all in-house capacity. Sometimes it's because I'm neutral and can tread easily where others perhaps can't. Fully researching a subject can mean talking to everyone from the CEO to the assembly line, and I'm equally at home with both.
It isn't always about writing from scratch though. I also love getting my hands on stuff that’s already written. Organisational change, business results, new product literature... they don't always start out that engaging! Not everyone has the time or know-how to proof and fine-tune their work, especially those pieces that are so big they take on a life of their own! A report that's been pulled together from multiple sources will inevitably include an assortment of styles. It's also likely to be peppered with mistakes, repetition and discrepancies. Which may leave you wondering where to start. Happily, knocking something like that into shape is right up my street.
I'm also hired by smaller entities that don't have a resident wordsmith, whether for one-off pieces such as a mailshot or brochure refresh, or to provide ongoing support - writing for a monthly newsletter for example - or simply to give their customer comms the once over before they're sent out.
